Abidjan Fashion Week: A Dazzling First Edition for Ivorian Fashion

From October 10 to 13, 2024, Abidjan hosted its very first Fashion Week, an event that marks a major turning point for Ivorian and African fashion.

Through this initiative, the organizer of the Ivorian Fashion Week, the renowned designer Elie Kuame, aims to restore Abidjan, the fashion capital of the 1970s-80s, to its status as a leader of West African fashion. To achieve this, he bet on an approach that fosters rich exchanges, blending tradition and modernity, local creativity and the international scene, emerging designers and established talents.

A high-fashion ode to local culture

Unlike other Fashion Weeks on the continent, which focus on ready-to-wear and urban styles, the Abidjan Fashion Week distinguished itself by highlighting haute couture and local craftsmanship.

Inspired by the theme “New Future,” the sixteen participating designers played with fusions between ancestral techniques and contemporary designs, incorporating iconic local textiles and motifs while modernizing them. For instance, Elie Kuame’s creations combined traditional Ivorian fabrics with modern materials like leather and silk, using asymmetrical cuts and futuristic silhouettes to create an aesthetic that is both local and universal. Similarly, the duo Simone & Elise used woven cloth for evening wear, an approach rarely explored.

These creations were showcased in the art gallery and garden of the Donwahi Foundation, which hosted an outdoor runway show under the stars, adding a magical touch to the event.

An intergenerational dynamic with a mentoring spirit

The event emphasized intergenerational partnerships, providing emerging designers with structured support and decisive visibility for their brands. In return, these interactions allowed established designers to draw inspiration from innovative ideas.

Young designers had the opportunity to present their collections alongside established names in joint runway shows—a fantastic chance to gain visibility and learn professional practices. Some established creators also collaborated with younger talents to develop specific collections or pieces, merging the experience of the former with the freshness of the latter.

A Young Talents competition allowed seven emerging designers to present their creations to a prestigious jury. The winner, the Ivorian duo Maison Kanty’s, recognized for their innovative designs, had the chance to collaborate with established designers to develop a capsule collection.

Building a fashion ecosystem

Beyond the runway shows, the event aimed to lay a solid foundation for the sustainable development of Ivorian fashion. By fostering collaborations between designers, artisans, and buyers, the Fashion Week established the groundwork for a complete and structured value chain in the fashion industry. Workshops on marketing, communication, and entrepreneurship aimed to professionalize this ecosystem, equipping young fashion houses with the tools to expand internationally.

Finally, recognizing that the ecosystem depends on funding, the organizers sought to attract the attention of public authorities and private investors to support the development of the fashion industry.

Undoubtedly, this successful first edition has contributed to positioning Abidjan among the great African fashion capitals, alongside Dakar, Lagos, and Bamako, and promises to make the Ivorian Fashion Week an annual must-attend event for enthusiasts and professionals in the field!
