Founded in 2020 by Valérie Ka, Africa Fashion Up is dedicated to identifying, supporting, and propelling a new generation of African designers onto the international stage. Each year, emerging talents from the continent and the diaspora take part in a journey combining training, mentorship, and media exposure in the world’s fashion capital.
Just announced, the 2025 selection reflects the major trends in contemporary African fashion, blending cultural roots with a global outlook.
The New Wave of African Fashion Design
Out of 300 applications received this year, a jury composed of experts from the worlds of fashion, luxury, and creative industries selected five high-potential profiles, showcasing the vitality and diversity of the African design scene.
The selection highlights the dynamism of English-speaking Africa, with two designers hailing from Nigeria. A self-taught talent, Frank Aghuno stands out with his instinctive and original style. Asymmetries, knots, draping—his brand Fruché is rich in unique details, offering a vibrant manifesto for self-expression. Oshobor Odion, meanwhile, flamboyantly revisits his cultural heritage. Bold silhouettes, vivid colors, and spectacular accessories are the signature of his brand Oshobor, which offers clients truly unique pieces.
More minimalist is the style of South African designer Samkelo Xaba, inspired by industrial architecture. His brand, Boyde, targets an urban clientele in search of understated luxury. Beneath the apparent simplicity of his architectural silhouettes—with neutral tones and flawless cuts—sophistication lies in the quality of materials and refined details.
Meanwhile, rooted in her time and open to the world, young Ethiopian designer Hawi Midekssa delivers a decidedly contemporary vision through her brand Hawii. Already noticed by the fashion press, her urban aesthetic and oversized silhouettes have been worn by artists such as Tayc and Calema.
Lastly, Cameroon is represented by a family trio—Dibo, Sume, and Fese—founders of Eloli World. Their creative universe celebrates female empowerment through a bold and colorful aesthetic.

Despite their stylistic differences, all five winners share a talent for bridging tradition and modernity, along with a strong ethical awareness. Local production, artisanal craftsmanship, limited series, recycled materials, and collaborations with surrounding communities: their commitment outlines the contours of a resolutely responsible African fashion.
Beyond the Catwalk: a Comprehensive Support Program
The highlight of their journey will take place on June 26 with a fashion show held in the heart of Paris, just steps from the Champs-Élysées, at the Bridge, beneath the iconic Pont Alexandre III. This evening will see the announcement of the Designer Africa Fashion Up 2025 and offer the laureates the opportunity to showcase their talents before an audience of cultural, artistic, and institutional figures.
Looking Back at the 2024 Fashion Show
While the fashion show is a much-anticipated moment, Africa Fashion Up offers far more than a spot on the runway. Its strength lies in the comprehensive and structured support it provides. At the end of June, the designers will take part in a professional immersion in Paris, including masterclasses, visits to major fashion houses, and a course in management and international business taught by HEC Paris. This week will mark the beginning of a four-month mentorship program, conducted in partnership with HEC, Balenciaga, and the Istituto Marangoni.
The 2025 winners will follow in the footsteps of designers such as Rich Mnisi (South Africa), Kente Gentlemen (Côte d’Ivoire), Eric Raisina (Madagascar), and Emmy Kasbit (Nigeria)—all discovered through previous editions and now established names on the international fashion scene. Their success is a testament to the impact of Africa Fashion Up, which in just a few years has become a true springboard for a new generation of African designers.
